Intel provides a utility called IBAUtil which allows you to update the expansion ROM images on many Intel NICs.
Renaming the ROM image
Apple macbook air 13 i7. Intel's IBAUtil ROM-burning tool requires filenames with a .iba extension rather than a .rom extension. Give your gPXE ROM image a name suitable for IBAUtil:
where bin/8086107c.rom is the gPXE ROM image that you have just built.
Preparing the tools
Download and save the two files:
- Intel's IBAUtil ROM-burning tool, available as part of PROBOOT.exe
Copy your gPXE ROM image to the FreeDOS boot disk:
where bin/8086107c.iba is the renamed gPXE ROM image as created earlier.
Run PROBOOT.exe. This is a Windows application; if you don't have a Windows installation available then you should be able to extract the files embedded in it using p7zip or cabextract. PROBOOT.exe will extract several files to the directory C:Intel13.3; the only file that you need is C:Intel13.3IBAUtil.exe.
NOTE: Be sure to get the latest version of PROBOOT.exe. Tested with version 14.3, but older versions are unable to burn images > 64kB in a correct way. Symptoms: 2nd prompt freezes system, no gPXE boot device in bios, but 1st prompt (ctrl+B) works and also autoboot within 1st prompt.
Copy IBAUtil.exe to the FreeDOS boot disk:
where /path/to/IBAUtil.exe is the path to your extracted copy of IBAUtil.exe.
Creating the boot disk
Transfer the boot disk image to a floppy disk:
If you do not have a floppy disk available, you can create a bootable CD-ROM using
and then burn the ISO image dosboot.iso to a recordable CD-ROM.
Burning the gPXE ROM
Boot from the floppy disk (or CD-ROM). At the DOS A:> prompt, type
You should see something like
Reboot the machine and enter the BIOS setup. You should see gPXE show up as an option in your BIOS's boot selection menu.

All,I was wondering if anyone has found the same thing that I did,
while trying to flash Intel NICs with iPXE. If you go and download the
latest preboot.exe (I got mine from here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=412&DwnldID=19186&lang=eng&iid=dc_rss
version 17.4, which gives a bootutil.exe version of 1.4.03.0, it
apparently does not like the rom format that iPXE presents. When I try
bootutil -nic=1 -up=pxe -file=80861229.iba

(Note, echo %errorlevel% shows error 14).
Also, I tried the bootutil in Linux, and got the same error. I also
tried many forms of the filename, and it didn't change the error.
However, grabbing the old prorpl.exe, from

version 10.4, IBAUtil version 3.03.06.00, it works fine, with the

Indeed, upon reboot, I'm presented with iPXE.
In my searching, I found an old forum posting, with suggestions from
Robin, however no reply after that:
http://forum.ipxe.org/showthread.php?tid=3420
Trying the suggestion (also suggested by Shao on IRC), I reduced the
size of the image, and padded it to the size of one saved from the
bootutil, and I still got the same error message.
At this point, it seems either the ROM needs to be saved in a new
format for the bootutil, or we have to use the old ibautil to flash it.
Has anyone found this, or found a way to get it to work with the new
bootutil?
